Here’s a look at what you’ll read inside this article
Digital Nomad Visas
The best thing about the Digital Nomad Work Visa is that it will not be subject to the “flusso” or the annual quota of work permits the Italian government makes available to foreigners. This has always been the main obstacle for people from outside the EU to come and live and work in Italy.
No need to get a spot in the flusso! (annual quota of work permits)
Starting soon, anyone who works remotely for a company or their own business can choose to reside in and work from Italy.
Work remotely:
- for a company
- for your own business
What is a Digital Nomad?
First of all, what is a digital nomad, according to the Italian authorities? Well, it’s a person with technical or professional skills who has a job which is done fully virtually and does not require your physical presence.
- Technical or professional skills
- Fully virtual job or business
Please note that many specifics are yet to be defined. About a month from the date of this video, the Italian government will release all of the detailed information and requirements on how to apply for this visa, so be sure to subscribe to my channel so you can get updated information.
Visa requirements in Italy
What we do know now is that you will need to apply for an entry visa from the nearest Italian Embassy or Consulate and you will need to: have proof of a certain minimum level of income, a clean criminal record, and health insurance. By the way, for a good, solid expat health insurance plan, see the link down below in the description of this video.

You will need to have:
- proof of a minimum income
- a clean criminal record
- health insurance

Then, once you enter Italy, you will need to obtain a permesso di soggiorno, or permit of stay, As far as we know, the initial duration will be one year, renewable. Keep in mind that this will place you in obligation to pay Italian taxes, because remember, where you pay taxes depends on where you actually live most of the year.
Permesso di soggiorno = permit of stay
But don’t worry, there are a couple of tax regimes which can apply to digital nomads and ease the impact of Italian taxes.
- Regime Forfettario
- Flat tax of 5% on 78% of your income.
- You can’t deduct business-related expenses.
- You can earn up to 65,000 euros per year.
- Impatriates Regime
- Taxes on only 30% of your income
- 10% if you live in certain regions in the south of Italy:
- Sicily, Sardinia, Calabria, Abruzzo, Molise, Campania, Puglia, and Basilicata
Keep in mind that no matter the regime, or your level of income, you are still responsible to pay contributions to INPS for social security.
Note: You will have to pay for INPS (social security)!

If you don’t identify as a digital nomad
If you’re not a Digital Nomad, keep in mind there still are other options for you to obtain a work visa. If you want to learn more about them, check out this video here about my journey of obtaining a visa per lavoro autonomo.
To gain some clarity on what’s happening with the Digital Nomad Work Visa, I asked Colin Jamieson of taxing.it, a lawyer and expert on tax matters for expats in Italy, and this is what he said:
“The law is enacted, but for the time being it is just a framework authorization by Parliament. Before anyone can apply for one of these visas, we need to wait for a further decree from the relevant Ministries (Interior, Labour, Foreign Affairs and Tourism) that will implement the new rules. Then I suspect for the actual application forms or website to be distributed or made ready.
This interministerial decree is expected within a month from now, to complete the details of the visa and define implementation matters.”
In the long run, if you are a Digital Nomad who has been thinking about making Italy your Home/Work Base then this place is perfect for you.
Italy is a truly fantastic country that has lots to offer…. from the cool cities of Rome, Florence, and Milan, to the amazing countryside, great weather, fabulous beaches, great food, and fantastic local cuisine. The possibilities in Italy are endless, what are you waiting for?
I wish you all the best of luck on your journey to come and live in Italy. If this is your dream, another window of opportunity just opened up to you. Bye for now!
