Best Books to Read for Expat Wealth and Financial Success
Best Books to Read for Expat Wealth and Financial Success
If you’re an expat wondering how you can maximize your hard-earned income while living and working abroad, this article is for you. It’s always good to learn from people with proven expertise in the topic, so stick around to find out the 3 best books for learning about how to make smart investments as an expat.
Knowing how to invest while living in another country can be confusing and frustrating. Trust me—I know. I’ve lived in many countries for long periods throughout my life: Italy, India, South Korea, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Japan, Thailand, and Pakistan.
First of all, let me start by saying that, in addition to the books I am going to recommend in this article, I would recommend also gaining some general financial literacy.
Financial education is a good first step, and to learn some important principles and investment tactics, which are important for anyone whether you’re an expat or not, check out the books I recommend in my video the Top 5 Books for Financial Success, here.
3 BEST BOOKS for EXPAT INVESTMENT
Now, back to the topic of investment books written specifically for expats. Are you ready for the first one? The number one book I recommend on this topic is
1. The Nomad Capitalist by Andrew Henderson.
Who is Andrew Henderson? He’s what I call a “serial expat” – someone who is perpetually traveling, has lived in multiple countries and has discovered a great deal of useful information about expat life all over the world.
Actually, pretty similar to my life!
As a result of living abroad for so many years, Henderson found out the best investment strategies for expats, the best places for expat opportunities, and more. Henderson claims to have reduced his global tax rate from 43% to 1%, in completely legal ways.
He also has several second citizenships and has invested in real estate in multiple countries. He prides himself on helping entrepreneurs build wealth, create freedom and keep the lifestyle we love: traveling the world and living abroad.
I also recommend going to his website, Nomadcapitalist.com and signing up for the newsletter. I get emails from them with news on opportunities for work, business, investment, and more in different countries around the world.

2. Expat Secrets by Mikkel Thorup
The topics in this book include tax residency, offshore bank accounts and offshore businesses, diversifying your overseas investments, and much more.
He also goes into detail about physical and digital assets, overseas education for your kids, expat communities abroad, and even language learning. You can also access many more free resources, like podcasts and blog articles about expat life, by going to his website, ExpatMoneyShow.com.
3. Millionaire Expat by Andrew Hallam.
Hallam was a high-school teacher who claims to have built a million-dollar profile on a teacher’s salary.
Now, through his books, he provides advice to those living overseas on how to build a solid investment portfolio. The unique feature of this book is that Hallam provides model portfolios according to your nationality.
There’s also a special section for retiring 10 years earlier in some of the best destinations for expat retirement in the world.
I think one important topic on the mind of all expats out there is how to make smart investments and build a portfolio that allows you to continue the lifestyle you love. Once bitten by the travel bug, it never leaves you. Right?
In any case, it’s a good idea to make sensible choices with your hard-earned bread and butter.
The first step is educating yourself. I hope these books will be useful for you in your journey to financial freedom.

5 BOOKS for FINANCIAL SUCCESS
Read these books to CHANGE YOUR MONEY MINDSET
There are 5 books that changed my life and my financial future. They taught me essential and practical techniques which stuck with me and allowed me to change my relationship with money. If you want to find out the 5 most influential books for financial success and changing your money mindset, keep reading.
Like many Americans, I was in debt with student loans and credit cards until I was 35. Now, I’m debt free, I own two apartments in Italy, I left my 6-figure job, and I’m running a successful business. I owe it ALL to these 5 books. So are you ready for the first one?
The first and one of the best books ever written about financial independence is this one:
1. Rich Dad, Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki
Author Robert Kiyosaki teaches you how to get out of the “rat race,” which is basically the endless cycle that most of us find ourselves in: work for someone else, wait for your paycheck, pay your bills, start again. In this system, you’re basically selling your time for money, and you’ll always have a limited, fixed income. And the minute you lose your job, you suddenly also lose your sole source of money. Robert Kiyosaki teaches you how to make investments that work for you and build your wealth to the point of financial independence. One of the most important points from this book that stuck with me was the importance of investing in property. Rich Dad, Poor Dad, is part of a trilogy of which could be sold either together or separately.
So my number 2 and number 3 books are this one: Cashflow Quadrant and Guide to Investing by Robert Kiyosaki. I highly recommend reading all 3 of these books in the trilogy, but if you only read one, then definitely read Rich Dad, Poor Dad.
2. Cashflow Quadrant by Robert Kiyosaki
CASHFLOW Quadrant is not only for those in search of job security, but also for those who are ready to take their career to the next level and experience financial security. Designed with the mindset of bettering oneself and achieving a more fulfilling life, Cashflow Quadrant provides the tools needed to succeed financially in all aspects.
Robert believes that one of the reasons for people’s financial struggles is that they attend school for years yet never learn about money management in the process.
Robert learned from his father that a lack of financial knowledge can cause people to work hard for money their whole life, instead of looking for ways to make it work for them.
3. Guide to Investing by Robert Kiyosaki
Different people can have different definitions of investing, and a big distinction is between passive investors and those who are more engaged. Rich Dad’s Guide to Investing, one of the three core titles in the Rich Dad Series, covers the basics of investing and reducing your investment risk.
The first step to wealth is understanding the core principles of investing. The Rich Dad philosophy is about managing your money in order to gain the means for investments, which can then help grow your assets.
4. Think & Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill
This 4th book on my list is a must-read, and it will change your life if you follow the instructions in it.
Just ignore the cheesy title. This book has been around since 1960 and it is still changing lives with the same, simple principles. The most life-changing part of this book is found in Chapter 4 about Autosuggestion. It basically consists of writing a statement in which you indicate how much money you want to earn and how you’re going to do it, within a specific amount of time.
Author Napoleon Hill suggests reading that statement to yourself out loud before bed and upon waking, every day. This practice lodges your financial goals into your subconscious mind. Then, through the law of attraction, you will follow through with those goals and attract that specified amount of money. I know, it sounds outlandish, but I decided to try it. I wrote my statement, and I put exactly how much money I wanted to earn.
And I sat there and read that statement before bed and upon waking up every single day for six months. And then, all of a sudden, out of the blue, I got offered a job for exactly the same amount of salary that I had been asking for in my statement, no joke. Then, since it had worked once, I decided to try it again, this time stating double the amount of salary I had been asking for in the first statement.
And again, I didn’t know how I was actually going to achieve that, but I just believed in the process, I kept reading that statement, and sure enough, after about 3 months, my salary doubled. As crazy as it sounds, it works—try it!
So number five book on my list is this one:
5. The Rules of Wealth by Richard Templar.
It consists of 107 rules that you need to follow in order to change your mindset and get started on the path to wealth. I like it because it’s easy to read, and these rules are in bite-sized one or two-page chapters that clearly explain the different attitudes and behaviors you need to adopt in order to become rich.
It’s never too late to get started on the path to becoming wealthy, and the first step is to educate yourself.
Read some good books!
These are the best books to read for expat wealth and financial success
In conclusion, you’ll want to read these books if you are planning to move abroad, build wealth or invest in foreign stocks. They are an excellent source of information about foreign markets, the local language and expat life.
